Andratx
How to get to andratx
Andratx is a municipality and village in Mallorca known for its combination of mountain and coastal landscapes, its historical heritage, and its peaceful atmosphere. It is located in the region or comarque of Serra de Tramuntana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and offers everything from picturesque mountain villages such as S’Arracó to the exclusive Port d’Andratx on the coast, famous for its luxury yacht harbor.
Toponymy
The origin of the toponymy of Andratx remains uncertain and there are several theories without conclusive evidence. The most widely accepted is that it comes from the Latin “antrum” (caves), due to the geography of the place. However, other studies suggest possible Celtic roots through the name “Andraquis”, or Arabic, with the term “indiraq” as one of the possibilities. Despite the multiple theories, the etymological origin of the name remains a subject of debate and there is no single proven theory. However, we can account for the fact that the name was first documented in 1236.
Geography and landscape
Located in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, the municipality offers mountainous landscapes with peaks such as Mola del Esclop and lush valleys. Autumn is especially beautiful with the foliage of almond and orange trees. The coast combines spectacular cliffs with sandy beaches and rocky coves, such as those at Camp de Mar. The islet of Dragonera, off the coast, is a nature reserve accessible from Port d’Andratx.
Location
It is located in the southwestern of Mallorca. It sits in one of the valleys that mark the beginning of the Serra de Tramuntana. It is about 30 km from the capital, Palma. It borders Estellencs to the northeast and Calvià to the east. The municipality is made up of six main towns: Andratx, S’Arracó, Sa Coma–Son Curt (inland) and Port d’Andratx, Sant Elm, and Camp de Mar (on the coast). It is therefore understandable that this popular town in Mallorca is characterized by a geography that combines inland valleys with high historical value and a spectacular coastline geared towards tourism.

Historical summary of Andratx
Ancient timesIts history dates back to Roman times (2nd century BC), where archaeological remains such as ceramics and coins have been found. The name “Andratx” was first documented in 1236, but its origin remains debated. The area where Andratx is located was occupied by the Romans, who called it Andrachium, as evidenced by finds of pottery and coins.
Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, due to constant attacks by Barbary pirates from North Africa, Andratx was built inland rather than on the coast. In the 16th century, a plan was developed to build or reinforce a system of defensive watchtowers. Of the 14 towers that were planned, 12 are still visible today. The church of Santa Maria d’Andratx, which was founded in the 13th century, shortly after the conquest of Mallorca, also served as a refuge for the population against pirates.
Modern and Contemporary Age
6th century: A plan was drawn up to review and build defensive towers, many of which are still preserved today.
18th century: Centralized administration promoted agriculture and fishing, which helped revitalize the area after periods of famine.
19th century: Industries such as soap manufacturing and wood processing developed briefly, before a new mass exodus.
20th century: The construction of defensive towers was complemented by the appearance of modern monuments such as the Castell de Son Mas and the town hall.
Tourism boom: From the mid-20th century onwards, mass tourism took hold, especially in coastal areas such as Port d’Andratx, Camp de Mar, and Sant Telm. It was from the 1960s onwards that tourism began to establish itself as an important economic driver, transforming the area into a luxury tourist center, although many of the inland towns retain their rural charm.
