Brief history of the Club
The port that houses the Club was built in 1975, taking advantage of a natural inlet called “Sa Caleta” which already had a history as a natural port for more than two thousand years. The Santa Ponça Yacht Club was founded in 1971, but has a history that dates back to the ancient occupation of the bay as a natural harbour, with evidence of Talayotic settlements in the area.
In ancient times, the port of Santa Ponsa was a place of trade and settlement for more than two thousand years, as evidenced by the presence of archaeological remains at Puig de sa Morisca.
In 1229 King Jaume I landed in Santa Ponsa to begin the conquest of Mallorca, which is commemorated by a commemorative cross. During the 16th century Santa Ponsa functioned as a commercial port, being known as “municipality of Santa Ponsa” before becoming “municipality of Calvià”. In 1971 the Santa Ponça Yacht Club was officially founded and in 1975 the current marina was built, taking advantage of the natural inlet “The Caleta”.
