Mallorca is and has been, since its origins, a land of confluences. Its strategic position in the Mediterranean has helped it to become an inter-cultural meeting point and a centre of maritime trade. Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans passed through the island and created the first stable settlements. Vandals, Moors and Spaniards also settled on the island for extended periods of time. With more than 2,600 years of settlement on the island, each of these civilisations left their mark on Mallorca and shaped what we know today as the culture of Mallorca.
