Palma de Mallorca Airport (IATA: PMI, ICAO: LEPA) is a Spanish public airport operated by Aena. Located 8 km east of the city of Palma, it is the gateway to the island of Mallorca for millions of passengers each year, especially during the tourist season.
It is one of the busiest airports in Spain, handling over 243,200 flights and more than 29 million passengers a year. During the first month (January) of 2025 alone, the airport handled and served more than 900,000 passengers.

The history of Palma de Mallorca Airport, also known as Son Sant Joan Airport (IATA code: PMI) begins at the beginning of the 20th century, with the development of air mail in the Balearic Islands. At this time, the government’s interest in postal aviation led to the exploration of airlines in the region.
As time went by, Palma de Mallorca airport evolved and those precarious and modest installations, which had been in use since the beginning of the 20th century, began to be used as an airport.
The airport has two fixed bases of operations (FBO) for business aviation, managed by Gestair FBO and Mallorcair. These facilities offer services to passengers, crews and aircraft, including hangars and fuel.

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) Son Sant Joan is the island’s main air terminal and has experienced significant growth over the years. During the 1930s, the first regular air transport lines were established between the cities of Palma de Mallorca and Madrid. During this period, the island’s commercial airport was Son Bonet airport, but three decades later it was moved to Son Sant Joan due to the increase in traffic and the impossibility of expanding the physical location of the former.

As we said, the current airport, with its modern terminal and two runways, was inaugurated in the 1960s to replace the old Son Bonet airport (which is now dedicated to general aviation) and to meet the growing needs of civil aviation and tourism on the island, as well as technological development and the expansion of commerce.
The new building where the current airport terminal is located was designed by Pere Nicolau Bover (a Mallorcan architect known for having designed the Parc de Mar and l’aeroport de Son Santjoan terminal) and was inaugurated in 1997.

1921: The first pilots arrive at Son Bonet, preparing a runway.
1934: The Mallorca Aero-Taxi company is created to organise tourist flights.

Son Bonet Airport
Despite the transition to Son Sant Joan, Son Bonet Airport continues to be used for general and sport aviation, being managed by Aena. The Son Bonet Aerodrome, located in Marratxí, currently has four hangars for aircraft and pilot training classrooms for housing aviation schools.
Structure of Son Sant Joan Airport
Palma de Mallorca Airport has a single main terminal divided into four modules: A, B, C and D. Each module is designed for different types of flights and passengers, facilitating the flow and organisation.
The main Terminal Building houses the Processor Building, where the four modules are distributed. Module A (mainly used for domestic flights) is used for non-Schengen passengers, while Module B is for inter-island flights. Modules C and D are used for domestic and international flights.
These modules are connected to each other and to the main terminal, facilitating the movement of passengers. In addition, the airport is well signposted, which helps passengers to find their way around and find their destination.
