Reserves and protected natural areas in Mallorca
Protected natural areas are geographical areas, either terrestrial or marine, designated for the conservation of nature and biodiversity, subject to a specific legal regime. They play a vital role in preserving ecosystems, species (especially endemic and endangered species), and the services that nature provides us, such as water and the regulation of ecological processes.

Reserves and protected areas in Mallorca
Protected areas in Mallorca are essential because they conserve biodiversity, protect unique natural habitats and ecosystems, and contribute to climate regulation and water purification. They also encourage sustainable development by supporting economic activities such as eco-tourism, and promote environmental education and recreation, preserving the island’s rich landscape and cultural heritage.
Conservation zones and biosphere reserves
The UNESCO-promoted biosphere reserves and protected natural areas are zones of Mallorca or regions that seek harmony between biodiversity conservation and human socioeconomic development, recognizing the importance of integrating the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems with the activities of local populations.
Protected natural areas and spaces in Mallorca
There are no designated Biosphere Reserves in any locality of Mallorca, as in Menorca.. Mallorca has other protected natural spaces, such as Natural Parks (this is the case of Es Trenc-Salobrar), and also has some Marine Reserves and areas of scientific interest.
Mallorca and its protected areas
Although Mallorca does not have a designated Biosphere Reserve, it does have other forms of protection:
Natural Parks: These include areas such as the Serra de Tramuntana and S’Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park and the Levante Peninsula Natural Park, among others.
Marine Reserves: Several marine reserves have been declared, such as those on the island of Toro and Las Malgrats, off the coast of Mallorca, with the aim of protecting the marine environment.
ZEPA and ZEC Areas: Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA) and Special Conservation Areas (ZEC) are protected areas within the Natura 2000 Network, covering habitats and species of conservation interest.
Mallorca: Ecological benefits of conservation areas
Ecosystem services contribute to the protection and recharge of aquifers, water purification, and climate regulation. They create economic opportunities through ecotourism, hiking, and other environmentally friendly activities that promote sustainable development and help mitigate the impact of human activities and slow biodiversity loss.
